Experiential Learning is a great strategy to provide quality education to the learners by engaging them in hands-on experiences and reflection so that they are better able to connect theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations.
Following this, the young Maxfortians of Classes IX and X had the exciting opportunity to visit the Yakult Factory, a place where the famous probiotic drink Yakult is made. The trip was both educational and fun, giving an insight into how the drink is produced and the Science behind its health benefits. The trip was organised on 31 August 2024, under the able guidance of respected Principal ma’am, Dr Ratna Chakravarty.
The tour began with an introductory video that explained the history of Yakult, which was created by Dr. Minoru Shirota, a Japanese microbiologist, in 1935. His goal was to improve gut health by introducing beneficial bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus casei Shirota, into people’s diets.
Next, the students were guided through the production area, wherein they observed the various stages of the Yakult production process, including fermentation, bottling, and packaging. It was fascinating to see how modern technology ensures that each bottle of Yakult is made to the highest standards of quality and safety.
One of the most interesting parts of the tour was watching the fermentation process. This is where the Lactobacillus casei Shirota bacteria multiply and create the unique taste and health benefits of Yakult.
The factory staff explained the health benefits of Yakult, emphasizing how the probiotics in the drink help maintain a healthy gut flora. This can lead to better digestion, improved immunity, and overall better health. An important aspect of the trip was learning about Yakult’s commitment to sustainability. The factory uses environmentally friendly practices, such as recycling water used in the production process and using energy-efficient equipment.
The trip to the Yakult Factory was a valuable experience that gave behind-the-scenes look at how a popular health drink is made. The visit provided a better understanding of the production process and the importance of gut health and sustainable manufacturing practices.
The visit inspired all to think more about what we consume and the benefits of probiotics. It was a perfect blend of Science, health education, and industrial processes, making it a memorable and enriching experience for everyone.
