“The seeds from Ramanujan’s garden have been blowing on the wind and have been sprouting all over the landscape.” –Freeman Dyson
Mathematics expresses itself everywhere in almost every facet of life- in nature all around us and in the technology in our hands. Mathematics develops computational skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Maxfort School, Rohini recognizes this and strives hard to ensure that the students obtain this knowledge. Under the able guidance of respected Principal ma’am Dr. Ratna Chakravarty the National Mathematics Day was celebrated virtually on 22 December 2021 to honour the famous Mathematician Sir Srinivasa Ramanujan, the world-famous Mathematician who made remarkable contributions in different fields and branches of the subject Mathematics. He has greatly contributed towards mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, elliptic integrals, the Riemann series and the hypergeometric series. To create awareness and to celebrate this day in the school, plethora of activities were conducted in classes I to IX and XI.
With the objective of making learning effective and enhancing numerical competence, the following activities were conducted during the Mathematics period in Grades I-V.
The students of Grade I performed an activity ‘Fun with shapes’ and the focus was to strengthen the creative skills of the students while making sceneries using 2D geometrical shapes. The students of Grade II made ‘My Routine Mat’ which focused on strengthening the concept of Time. The students of Grades III and IV came up with beautiful creations of ‘Fractional Art and Warli Art’. Taking the lead forward the students of Grade V applied four basic Mathematical operations to create their own ‘Crossword Puzzle’.
With the integration of art, students of grade VI prepared 3D shapes using toothpicks, straws and clay material. Students of grade VII unveiled their creativity by displaying String Art, exercising the concept of lines and patterns. An array of fractals was presented by students of Class VIII. This acted as a powerful tool for analysing and communicating complex ideas.
For class IX a poster making activity was held on the topic Ambidextrous Mathematics. In this activity students demonstrated the different aspects of Mathematics in a creative way.
For class XI, a Graphical Activity was done through the Desmos Software in which class XI students formed different objects on graph by using different equations. Through this activity students demonstrated their creative skills and connected the different equations of circles, lines, linear inequalities and parabola with Art. All the students participated with full enthusiasm. It was a great learning experience.
With the guidance and support of the respected Principal Ma’am, Dr. Ratna Chakravarty, students have presented their innovative projects in an excellent way through online mode. Students made beautiful designs using geometrical shapes to explore Mathematical beauty in Art, on chart paper and A4 sheets.
